A few notes on things that would have been nice to cover, but we did not have the time.

Being Portland, I am sure a great many people will be wondering, “why use coal at all?”.

The answer lies in the fact that there is no supply chain that currently exists to feed garbage derived biomass at scale. We will have to help build this from scratch, which will take time and a significant investment in the required infrastructure. The task is big enough, and the amount of feedstock required large enough, that there is no way to stand up the supply chain required for us to operate entirely on biomass at the same time as we are building the plant. De-rating the plant, operating at less than full capacity, would be death to the economics of the project. We also cannot build a smaller plant, and still achieve a competitive economy of scale that will allow us to produce at a cost competitive with oil unsubsidized. Like it or not, coal is an important bridge until we can bring this biomass supply chain into operation. Once it’s there, then we can work towards emulating places like Germany, where only 0.7% of the total waste stream actually ends up in a landfill. Everything else is either recycled, or converted into energy.
